Delusional Clients

19 Oct

Got this email from an former (read: hasn’t used us in 4 years) client this morning:

“We would like to develop a video-based interactive site for our sales process which we’d like to be fairly high-end. In addition to running it on the kiosks in the sales center and on the web, we would like a media campaign to drive potential customers to the site. Before we make a decision, we need a fully loaded cost for everything including costs to get it on the web and media. Basically I’m asking you to give us an estimate for the following:

  • Casting, talent and video shoot
  • Flash programming
  • Site creation
  • Banner creation
  • 3 month media plan
  • Implementation and QA

To give you a ballpark of where we’re at budget-wise, we have approximately $32,000 left in the budget for fiscal 2007. Thanks for your help in advance, and we look forward to hearing from you.”

I can’t wait to make this phone call. “I’m sorry, but $32,000 will just about get you one non-union talent, an account manager, one static banner and some bagels.”

Why have clients lost their mind and not realize what things cost? The last agency I was at, one of our biggest clients came to us and wanted a national TV spot and a trade show video. Their budget was 20k. And that was from concept through production.
