Leveraging Ad Agency Life

Jesus and Vodka June 20, 2007

Take a look at the new site for Reyka Vodka - nice use of green screen on the “Watch TV” section.  And really funny - the Jesus/vodka thing might anger some fundamentalist Christians, but eff them - they shouldn’t be visiting a site about liquor anyway.

Clients and Public Restrooms June 12, 2007

Finding out one of your biggest clients is completely unethical and morally corrupt is like sitting down on a toilet seat in a crowded public restroom and the seat being really warm. It’s gross and off-putting, but you stay there because you really have to go and you already have your pants down.

Brahma Beer has the coolest microsite out, creative done by Park Studio in Moscow. It lets you decorate your own VW van with some funky stuff - easy to use and subtly branded. Besides, anything that combines beer and automobiles is tops in my book.

Consolidated Feedback June 6, 2007

Filed under: Interactive, Rich Media, advertising, agencies, agency, creative, flash, viral — Agency Tart @ 10:08 am

Clients: is one email with consolidated feedback too much to ask? Yesterday, I got TWELVE emails from a client, each with one tiny little change to make to a comp. My project manager had to send out so many amended work orders that I thought the traffic manager was going to strangle her. You might say, “Agency Tart, you’re not managing your client very well.” And to that I’d say, “Screw you. Yes, you’re right.”

I love when ad agencies do creative things just to show off and have fun. On Ads Of The World, I saw that Bailey Lauerman (Lincoln, Nebraska) did this cute, cute birthday card for their clients using Oddcast. Love the work, but hate that everyone in their office is good looking. Makes our shop look like a group of people rounded up from the bathrooms of a Greyhound station.

In a quandary concerning your lame co-workers, your even lamer creative director, your client or a project you royally screwed up? Or are you the client and need to know why your agency is so unresponsive (I can answer that one now - you’re a needy bitch and they don’t like dealing with you)? Send me an email or leave a comment and I’ll post my insightful and profound answer for all to see.

The New Whiteboard? June 1, 2007

UPS has been winning all sorts of kudos for their Whiteboard campaign - initially, I loved it, now it’s getting to be overkill - they’re using it everywhere. Take a look at this site for author/performance artist Miranda July’s new book which uses a sort of whiteboard in a very, very clever, lo-fi way. I’m going to buy her book solely based on the site - I’m easily swayed. Go on, try to sell me anything - I just bought canned eels yesterday because they were mentioned in a book I’m reading.

Don’t know who this Criss Angel guy is… May 16, 2007

Filed under: Interactive, advertising, agency, cool, creative, photoshop, viral — Agency Tart @ 2:56 pm

..but his people suck at Photoshop - I mean look at the abs and the big blur over his lovely necklace. Other than that, I love this site - original, viral stuff. And I kinda like his used-up, clen look. You need to know the phone number of the friend you’re going to send it to, because it’s a 2 part deal. And if you don’t know their number, they’re not really your friend, are they?

Side note: If you’re the creative director of a local office of one of the nation’s largest ad agencies, don’t wear khakis, a blue blazer with gold buttons and red Sally Jesse Raphael glasses. Just sayin’.

Dial really got sold a bill of goods on this microsite for Dial for Men (no offense to the agency who I won’t mention…). After seeing the illustration of the guy (below), I threw up in my mouth a little bit. Maybe it’s because I imagine that’s the way our agency’s search guru looks like naked, but it’s probably because it’s just plain bad.

The Takeover Cometh, The Final Episode May 8, 2007

It was announced finally! But I’m a little depressed because I don’t have that smug feeling anymore. I’ll have to find something else to be a pompous bitch about. Anyway, it’s very exciting, not at all what anyone expected and I still can’t tell anyone outside the agency.

Just found out this morning that my largest project hasn’t been worked on in over 2 weeks, although the creatives lied through their teeth and said they were hammering away at it. Now I have to go back to the client and make up another lame excuse. My aunt in Moline has died three times already, so can’t use that one.

Everybody wants to do the latest ultra-rich media ads, but a rotating gif can be just as interesting. I was perusing dlisted this morning, getting my daily dose of celebrity crap (it’s truly a wonder we haven’t gone the way of the Roman Empire), and saw a black and white skyscraper banner for a new gossip site called Dotspotter. It rotated text (below) like “Linsday goes commando” and “Britney needs to stop”….and that’s all. Less is more people.

Creative Directors Who Suck May 2, 2007

Filed under: Interactive, advertising, agencies, agency, creative — Agency Tart @ 12:54 pm

We’re secretly interviewing for a new Creative Director - it’s posted as “company confidential”. But I really don’t think we need a new one. Matt is very busy thinking up the next big idea (read: talking on his cell in the lobby) so he just doesn’t have time to lead the team on client creative. He’s so misunderstood. I mean, don’t all clients love work that is actually just like the templates that come packaged with Illustrator?

I found this agency on The Daily Slurp - Second Story Interactive. Love that their site is not typically uber-modern, like most interactive shops. The intro music sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, which is exactly like I imagine a biographical movie about me beginning. Seems most of their clients are museums - the list looks like The History Channel on acid.  You’ll like them - I do.
